Welcome To Katunarić Art Gallery
About us
Welcome to the Art Gallery Katunarić, a vibrant artistic haven nestled in the heart of Split, Croatia. Our gallery is dedicated to celebrating the rich heritage and contemporary works of two extraordinary artists from the Katunarić family, whose talents span generations and artistic disciplines.
Ante Katunarić (1877-1935)
Ante Katunarić, born in Split on January 11, 1877, was a multifaceted artist whose contributions significantly enriched the cultural landscape of his hometown. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Ante’s artistic journey began in the late 19th century, flourishing through the early 20th century. His work, deeply rooted in Impressionism, was inspired by the picturesque landscapes and marinas of Italy, particularly Chioggia, where he created alongside his close friend, Emanuel Vidović.
Ante’s versatility was remarkable; he excelled in painting, graphic arts, literature, music, journalism, and photography. His engravings, illustrations, and graphic designs graced numerous publications, while his paintings captured the serene beauty of his surroundings. His notable friendships with prominent artists like Ivan Meštrović and collaborations with literary figures such as Vicko Mihaljević further enriched his creative output.
As a true cultural pioneer, Ante was also an active sportsman and an influential figure in the early history of HNK Hajduk Split, serving as its president in the early 1910s. His literary works, written under the pseudonym “Duje Balavac,” remain celebrated for their humor and poignant reflections on life in Split.
Ante Katunarić (Born 1938)
Continuing the family legacy, the younger Ante Katunarić was born in Split on January 2, 1938. After moving to Zagreb post-World War II, he pursued studies at the Academy of Applied Arts, specializing in Architecture, Interior Design, and Design. Despite a successful career as an architect, Ante’s passion for painting never waned. Upon retirement in 2005, he returned to his artistic roots, focusing on oil and acrylic landscapes that capture the breathtaking beauty of Split, Croatia, and the Kupres plateau in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
His works eschew modernity in favor of faithfully portraying the natural world, drawing inspiration from the mystical Kukavica Lake near the village of Botun. Each painting is a testament to his desire to immortalize the enchanting charm of nature.
